Scottie Scheffler endured a difficult start to the US Open after a two-over 72 in round one.

Scheffler is looking to complete the career Grand Slam at Shinnecock Hills, which proved very difficult for many players on Thursday.

And that included the world number one, who finds himself in a tie for 49th place heading into his second round.

But it appears that Scheffler has a wider problem at the tournament, with the American suffering an unwanted career milestone at the US Open.

What have you made of the setup on Thursday at the US Open?

Shinnecock Hills has been brutal…

Scottie Scheffler hits unwanted career milestone at the US Open

Remarkably, Scheffler now has 10 straight US Open rounds where he has failed to break par.

The nightmare run dates back to the final round of the tournament in 2023.

His latest slip-up now leaves him eight shots off the lead, with his compatriot Wyndham Clark leading on six-under through 16 when play was suspended due to darkness.

He now has it all to do after his first round at Shinnecock Hills, which comprised four birdies, nine pars, four bogeys and one double bogey.

Scheffler admitted to a challenging US Open first round, but it would be foolish to rule out his chances of a recovery on Friday.

He’s chasing his second PGA Tour win of the season, having emerged victorious at The American Express in his first event of 2026.

What is Scottie Scheffler’s record at the US Open?

Despite this unwanted milestone at the US Open, Scheffler still boasts a superb record at the major championship.

He has missed the cut twice from his eight appearances, but elsewhere has posted very impressive finishes.

That includes finishing as joint runner-up in 2022 at The Country Club, and third at The Los Angeles Country Club the following year.

Elsewhere, Scheffler has posted two T7 finishes, as well as finishing T27 and T41.

It is, of course, the only major that the 29-year-old has yet to win, having clinched the PGA Championship and The Open Championship titles in 2025 after two victories at The Masters.
