Scottie Scheffler endured yet another challenging day on the golf course on Thursday at the US Open.
Scheffler struggled throughout his opening round at Shinnecock Hills, especially with his iron play.
Incredibly, the world number one lost 1.11 strokes to the field with his irons and was ranked 121st in strokes gained approach on day one of the US Open.
Scottie Scheffler‘s opening round at Shinnecock Hills was actually symbolic of his entire season on the PGA Tour so far.

In the end, he would have been very proud of himself after posting a 72 on day one at the US Open.
However, Scheffler was spotted arguing with Randy Smith, his coach, on the driving range after his opening round.
So the 29-year-old clearly was not happy with something.
Scottie Scheffler frustrated by what Randy Smith was telling him at Shinnecock
Scheffler has history of demonstratively waving his arms in the direction of his coach during heated discussions on the driving range.
And Smylie Kaufman thinks he knows exactly why the world number one golfer was so angry on Thursday at Shinnecock.
When speaking on The Smylie Kaufman Show, the former PGA Tour player revealed where he thinks Scheffler’s frustrations were coming from.
“You know, I think a lot of times when you have a coach like Randy Smith, who’s Mr. Fundamentals, right, he’s not gonna overcomplicate something,“ Kaufman said.
“And sometimes as a player, you go and try to say, like, ‘No, it’s something more’.
“It’s something that you’re not seeing, and I think great teachers, oftentimes, go back to the basics.

“It’s like, Hey, it’s some of this, and, and, hey, and if it is off, Randy will tell him, ‘Hey, when we get to next week, I’ll tell you this, this what you work on’, but this isn’t the place.
“These aren’t the conditions to go and try to work on a new feel.
“You’ve got to play with what you’ve got here when you show up at the U.S. Open.“
Scottie Scheffler’s stats from day one at the US Open
We’ve already highlighted how Scheffler was ranked outside the top 100 in strokes gained approach on Thursday at Shinnecock.
However, he gained strokes in all of the other three main categories.
Scheffler was ranked 58th in strokes gained putting, gaining 0.88 strokes on the field.
He was ranked 57th in strokes gained off the tee, having gained 0.38 strokes on his competitors.
The best part of the 29-year-old’s game was his chipping and pitching.
Scottie Scheffler was ranked 33rd in strokes gained around the greens on day one at Shinnecock Hills, having gained 0.88 strokes on the field.
It’s clear to see that Scheffler needs to sharpen up his iron play, if he is to contend for this year’s US Open. However, whether he is able to do that mid-tournament remains to be seen.
