Chelsea have had trouble finding that right number one in recent years with several players used to no success.
In some cases, the Chelsea fans will point towards the lack of stability and consistency at the club that has led to this point.
The two goalkeepers used last season were – Robert Sanchez and Dorde Petrovic – with Kepa Arrizabalaga returning from his Real Madrid loan spell ahead of the new Premier League season.
But no one is the wiser as to who will be the main guy, with Scott Minto pointing out that ‘Chelsea don’t have a standout goalkeeper’ despite having three senior shot-stoppers on their books.
In truth, this doesn’t also help new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who already has a difficult job on his hands given how the club has declined in recent years.
So, do the West London outfit stick by what they have and improve on that? Or will Maresca want his own man through the doors?
Euro 2024 just concluded with Spain defeating England in the final and the tournament as a whole producing average football.
But there were a number of high-quality defensive performances and goalkeepers making a name for themselves.
Minto thinks Giorgi Mamardashvili of Georgia was the best goalkeeper on show, as he labelled him as ‘sensational’.
The former Chelsea man has also backed the 23-year-old to make a transfer to Stamford Bridge by adding that it would be a ‘big move’ for the Valencia star, as he told talkSPORT (21/07/24 at 4:30 pm).
Giorgi Mamardashvili backed to be Chelsea’s new goalkeeper
“Giorgi Mamardashvili, I thought he was sensational,” said Minto. “He’s at Valencia and is only 23. He is still at the start of his career.
“I am not quite sure which Premier League clubs. I am going through the teams who really desperately need a goalkeeper.
“What I would say is that Chelsea don’t have a standout goalkeeper. I think they have a couple of decent goalkeepers. No one stands out. Again, it’s a big move. He would fit the bracket in terms of age group.”

Chelsea’s lack of stability
You just question if things don’t start well with Maresca how the fans will react – Christopher Nkunku has shared his verdict on Maresca’s training sessions at Chelsea
Will fans call for his head straight away? Chelsea can’t continue down this road of changing managers without any trophy success.
