Remi Matthews has taken to Instagram to pile further mockery on Jean-Philippe Mateta, after the striker made a request to Crystal Palace fans.

What’s the story?

Well, the £9m man recently asked supporters to shout ‘boom’ when he next kicks the corner flag, which has become his trademark goal celebration.

Earlier this week, Wilfried Zaha expressed his thoughts on the request, writing that Mateta has “lost the plot” on Instagram.

Now, Matthews – who joined on a free transfer from Sunderland in July – had also poked fun at the Frenchman.

As you can see above, the 28-year-old approached Mateta in the car park at Crystal Palace’s training ground, where he asked: “Scored a few goals have we?”

Matthews then shouts “bang” as he’s walking away from the car, deliberately winding Mateta up as he shouts “boom, boom, not bang” in response.

Clearly, the Crystal Palace squad have been having some fun with the 24-year-old hilarious request.

It feels strange to see Mateta leading the line every week and having a laugh with his teammates when you consider his situation in January.

At the start of 2022, the Frenchman seemed destined to leave Selhurst Park, as Saint-Etienne held talks about taking over his loan from Mainz 05.

In the end, a shock turn of events saw the Eagles make his loan deal permanent for just £9m, and he’s now among the most popular players under Patrick Vieira.

It has been a very impressive turnaround, and Mateta deserves credit for not giving up on his career in the Premier League.
