Former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Stale Solbakken accused the Championship of being “brainless”.

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Dean Saunders has criticised his predecessor, Stale Solbakken, on Talksport.

Solbakken, who managed Wolves for eight months until his dismissal in January 2013, is now in charge of Leicester City’s Champions League opponents FC Copenhagen.

Ahead of Wednesday’s fixture between the two clubs, and after a spate of Championship sackings, the Norwegian told reporters that England’s second tier is a “brainless” division – and said he would not have gone there, knowing what he does now.

However, as far as Saunders is concerned, having inherited Solbakken’s Wolves squad and relegated them five months later, the 48-year-old only has himself to blame for losing his job at Molineux.

“He’s not right there, everybody loves it (the Championship),” Saunders told Talksport on Wednesday morning. “He came into Wolves and they were sinking, they’d lost I think 70 games in four years.

“He was trying to steady the ship and he signed Razak (Boukari), (Bakary) Sako, (Tongo) Doumbia, (Georg) Margreitter, (Slawomir) Peszko, the Polish international, Bjorn (Sigurdarson), the big lad who plays up front for Iceland.

“He signed a load of players like that who didn’t know the league. He tried to play like Guardiola-type football and in the Championship there is no respect – teams will not let you do that.”

Since then, Solbakken has led FC Copenhagen to two Danish cups and one league title, while Saunders is currently out of work following spells at Crawley Town and Chesterfield.

Wolves later returned to the Championship under Kenny Jackett, who was sacked in July to accommodate Italian boss Walter Zenga.

Zenga, though, lasted just four months in the role, leaving the Black Country club considering their next appointment.
