Sam Darnold’s former college teammate believes the quarterback’s defining strength is a mindset that allowed him to stay calm under pressure long before his Super Bowl appearance.

Former USC quarterback Max Browne has shared insight into Sam Darnold’s mentality based on their time together at Southern California during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Browne played alongside Darnold in a highly competitive environment and says that experience revealed a trait that has remained consistent throughout Darnold’s career.

Max Browne explains how Sam Darnold keeps calm under pressure

In an interview with The Athletic, Max Browne said Sam Darnold separated himself from other USC quarterbacks because he did not carry visible stress despite constant competition for the starting job.

He explained that most young quarterbacks struggled with pressure, but Darnold did not allow mistakes to affect his confidence.

“Sam was certainly competitive, but I never sensed the stress that young quarterbacks are often under. The stress of learning a new playbook. The stress of throwing an interception at practice and becoming gun-shy. That never, ever happened with him.”

Browne said that approach allowed Darnold to play freely rather than becoming tentative. He added that Darnold’s perspective was evident from the beginning of their time together.

“From the time I first met him, he always had perspective. Football never felt like life or death to him, and it allowed him to just play freely.”

Max Browne said that the same mindset later helped Sam Darnold navigate early challenges in his NFL career. He recalled a conversation that reflected how Darnold viewed adversity.

“He said to me one time after his challenging rookie season with the Jets, ‘At the end of the day, I’m a quarterback in the NFL. Life is pretty good.’ That wasn’t just lip service. He truly lived that at each stage of his career.”

“I think that’s why Sam never lost himself when things got tough during his first eight years in the NFL.”

”He stayed light and kept perspective. That mindset didn’t just help him survive the challenging times, it propelled him to the Super Bowl.”

Browne believes that outlook prevented Darnold from becoming overwhelmed as expectations followed him from college into the league.

He said that mindset ultimately helped Darnold progress beyond simply enduring difficult stretches.
