Sam Darnold is set to start the Super Bowl for the Seattle Seahawks after a career that has included stops with five different teams.

Speaking about the matchup, Spears explained why Darnold’s resurgence has caught his attention. He referenced Darnold’s movement across multiple teams before finally finding success in Seattle.

Spears described how Darnold’s situation changed after a late-season setback elsewhere, followed by a dramatic turnaround for the team that moved on from him.

“We have Drake Maye with his story and obviously Sam Darnold with his story. I love greatness and greatness should go as long as it possibly can. I’m not one of those ones that gets tired of people winning.“

“The story of a guy that’s been on five teams, won 14 games with another team, had a bad end-of-the-year game, and they decided to move in a different direction.“

“They fell absolutely off a cliff. Then you look at Drake Maye, who was not the darling of the dance but was still considered a really good quarterback.

“Culturally, you see things change around him, and they find themselves in the Super Bowl. I just think it’s such a cool story.“

“Yes, it’s great to see Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Matthew Stafford, and those guys consistently in the Super Bowl. But isn’t this cool?”
