Ryan Taylor has claimed that James Tarkowski would be a ‘great addition’ for Newcastle United, after Kieran Trippier, as he told the Transfer Show on Sky Sports.
The former Newcastle defender thinks Newcastle need to target the ‘spine’ of their team during the January transfer window.
Well, Newcastle’s first possible signing won’t be down the spine, but on the right side of defence because it seems as though they are closing in on Kieran Trippier.
Sky Sports have reported that the England international has arrived on Tyneside ahead of a medical and transfer from LA Liga champions, Atlético de Madrid.
Taylor knows exactly what it’s like playing in front of the St James’ Park crowd and he thinks that’s one reason why Trippier is joining
But he feels that someone like Tarkowski would be another top signing, but questioned whether Burnley would let the 29-year-old go.
“I think it’s right down the middle of the pitch (Newcastle’s problems), the centre-half position,” said Taylor. “Maybe bring in a central midfielder and a striker to help Callum Wilson.
“I think if they can get a solid spine in the team and build it around there, with the players they have got like Saint-Maximin, then I think they will be fine.
“But, they do need to strengthen that central defence. I have seen the target of James Tarkowski. He only has a few months left on his deal.
“Will Burnley let him go to a club that is, more or less, in the same position as them? Do they take the chance, take some money now? Or just let him go for free in the summer? Of course, money talks. I think he would be a great addition to Newcastle.”

If Newcastle can get Trippier’s name through the door, then it’s a statement of intent from the club.
They are signing an England international and managing to lure a player that is performing in the Champions League.
This Trippier signing will set the bar for the Magpies regarding who they can sign this window and Tarkowski would be a strong shout after him.
But Burnley might just demand stupid money for the player, and given that he only has six months left on his deal, they are probably better looking elsewhere.
