Ryan Clark has sparked fresh debate across the NFL by claiming Matthew Stafford now ranks among the top 10 quarterbacks in league history.

Matthew Stafford’s first NFL MVP award at the age of 37 has already fueled new conversations about his legacy, but Clark took the discussion further than most.

Speaking on First Take, the former safety said the MVP win should fundamentally change how Stafford’s career is viewed.

Ryan Clark makes his case for Matthew Stafford

Ryan Clark said Matthew Stafford’s MVP award removes any remaining doubt about his standing among the game’s greats. Clark then went a step further, placing Stafford in rare historical company.

Clark also suggested that Stafford’s move away from Detroit played a major role in how his career is now remembered.

“It solidifies him as a first ballot Hall of Famer. It puts him in the top 10 of quarterbacks that’s ever played this game.”

“His career, to me, is now solidified in a way it never would have been had he stayed in Detroit.”

Clark’s comments have drawn pushback from fans who question whether Stafford belongs in the same tier as names like Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, or Aaron Rodgers.

Why Stafford’s MVP has intensified the debate

Stafford’s MVP season adds to a resume that already includes a Super Bowl title with the Los Angeles Rams and multiple Pro Bowl selections.

He currently ranks sixth all-time in passing yards and seventh in passing touchdowns, numbers that support Clark’s argument from a production standpoint.

Despite the criticism, Clark has stood by his stance, insisting the MVP award cements Stafford’s place among the game’s elite.

With Stafford set to return for the 2026 season, his career remains active, but the debate over where he ranks historically has clearly intensified.
