Matthew Stafford appears to have put an end to retirement speculation by hinting at a return to the Los Angeles Rams during his NFL MVP acceptance speech.

The veteran quarterback had faced questions about his future following the Rams’ playoff run, but his comments on stage suggested he is not yet ready to step away.

The moment came as Stafford collected the biggest individual honour of his career.

Matthew Stafford addresses future during MVP speech

While accepting the NFL MVP award, Matthew Stafford took the opportunity to indicate that he expects to be back on the field next season.

The 37-year-old referenced playing football rather than attending award ceremonies, a remark widely interpreted as confirmation he will return for the 2026 campaign with the Los Angeles Rams.

“I can’t wait for you to cheer me on next year when we’re out there kicking a–. I’ll see you guys next year. Hopefully, we’re not at this event and getting ready for another game at SoFi.”

Stafford’s comments came after weeks of uncertainty following the Rams’ defeat in the NFC Championship Game.

He finished the season as the league’s leading passer, throwing for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns while guiding Los Angeles deep into the postseason.

Stafford had delayed decision amid retirement speculation

In the days after the NFC Championship loss, Stafford stopped short of committing to another season.

He previously explained that any decision about his future would involve physical, mental, emotional, and family considerations, while stressing that no immediate timeline had been set.

The MVP speech marked a notable shift in tone, aligning with public backing from head coach Sean McVay, who had expressed a desire to see Stafford return.

With one year remaining on his contract and another elite season behind him, Stafford now appears set to lead the Rams again in 2026.
