Roy Keane has said on Sky Sports Premier League (5:26pm, September 4, 2022) that Gabriel Martinelli’s goal for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United away from home at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon was rightly disallowed.
The Manchester United legend has said that although during his playing career, it would not have been a foul, the way the game is going now, Martin Odegaard’s challenge on Christian Eriksen was a foul.
Former Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder Eriksen was bundled over by Norway international playmaker Odegaard just inside the Arsenal half.
Mikel Arteta’s side launched a counter-attack.
Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli was slipped through by Bukayo Saka, and he brilliantly clipped the ball past United goalkeeper David de Gea.

It was a wonderful goal, but it was overturned.
VAR advised referee Paul Tierney to look at the pitch-side monitor, and he decided to disallow the goal.
Speaking during the half-time discussion, former Manchester United star Keane said that it was a foul in the modern game, adding that it would have been a different decision back in the day.
Roy Keane on Manchester United v Arsenal VAR controversy
Keane said: “Yeah, it’s soft, of course, but I think what helps United here is that Odegaard, he doesn’t actually get a touch on the ball, and again, obviously the way we played, in a different era, not a foul, but today, the way the game’s going, if you get touched…”
