Fabrizio Romano has told Caught Offside that Tottenham are yet to make a decision on the future of Lucas Moura and he could depart on a free transfer – with Newcastle United said to have shown interest in the Brazilian in the summer.

Lucas, 30, signed a five-year deal in 2019. But he has now confirmed that it was a contract that runs until 2023, with the option of an extra year. He signed the deal not long after his exploits in the Champions League semi-final against Ajax.

Joining the club in January 2018, he has since clocked up 204 appearances in all competitions. During that time, Lucas has had a hand in 65 goals – scoring 38 and creating 27. He remains a crucial part of the squad, albeit on the fringes.

Romano reported this week that the Brazil international, as things stand, could leave next summer. He says Spurs are yet to make a decision on Lucas’ contract, whether to activate the one-year extension. There is Premier League interest.

Indeed, Romano states that reports of a move to Aston Villa were wide of the mark. However, Newcastle United did show interest and that desire to sign the ex-PSG man could remain as we approach the January transfer window.

Despite reports to the contrary, Lucas Moura has never been close to joining Aston Villa. Newcastle were interested this summer but there was never an advanced negotiation with Tottenham.

“I think Lucas may have the chance to leave Spurs as a free agent but it will depend on how his performances go this season, the club has not yet decided,” Romano said, during an interview with Caught Offside.

Romano: Tottenham yet to make decision on Lucas

It would be a blow for Tottenham if Lucas did depart. He is the kind of player that is happy just to be a part of the squad. A brilliant attitude that the younger Spurs players can learn from. As long as he contributes here and there.

Lucas still has immense quality and that is proven by producing a goal or an assist roughly every three appearances. That is, despite 72 of his 204 appearances for Spurs being from the bench. He is happy to be a squad player.

That is why Tottenham simply have to keep him, and keep him away from the illustrious clutches of Newcastle – and other clubs, which will inevitably come to the table if he is available on a free transfer.
