Premier League legend Robert Pires believes Mo Salah should choose Barcelona over Real Madrid if he opts to leave Liverpool, speaking via King Fut.

With their talismanic top-scorer jetting out for the African Cup of Nations, Liverpool supporters are about to get a taste of life without the Egyptian superstar.

Should Jurgen Klopp’s side drop points against Brentford and Crystal Palace, while exiting the EFL Cup at the hands of a rejuvenated Arsenal, the clamour for Salah’s new contract to be signed and sealed will intensify.

Despite months of negotiations, no agreement has been reached with the 2019 Champions League winner entering the final 18 months of his current deal.

Salah admitted in October that he would love to stay at Anfield for the rest of his career (talkSPORT).

But, as long as that new contract remains un-signed, rumours linking him with a pair of La Liga giants will continue to rumble on.

Will Mo Salah leave Liverpool for Barcelona?

“The current world’s best in my eyes is PSG’s Kylian Mbappe but two Premier League stars come right after; Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah,” said Pires, a Premier League winner with Arsenal in 2002 and 2004.

“Mohamed Salah’s future depends on what he wants, whether he continues with Liverpool or goes for a new experience. It’s up to him.”

“Between Barcelona and Real Madrid, and considering the player’s qualities, I think Salah would perform better with Barca.

“His communication with Xavi would be easy.”

The one-time Chelsea, Roma and Fiorentina winger addressed Barcelona’s alleged interest a few weeks ago, admitting that he was flattered to emerge as a leading target for one of the biggest clubs in Europe, albeit one that has fallen on hard times recently (Football365).

Barca president Joan Laporta certainly raised eyebrows when he claimed that the footballing world should be quaking in it’s boots.

Barcelona, he said, are ‘back’.

Of course, the legitimacy of such a claim falls down a little when you consider that a side over £1 billion in debt cannot even register new signing Ferran Torres due to their dire financial situation.
