The PGA Tour, and professional golf in general, has a serious problem right now and they have to nip it in the bud as soon as possible.

Robert MacIntyre missed the cut at The Masters this week after shooting rounds of 80 and 71.

However, the Scot wasn’t just criticized for his poor golf at Augusta National.

MacIntyre lost his temper on numerous occasions during day one at The Masters.

The 29-year-old Scot flipped up his middle finger to the cameras after finding the water with his second shot on the 15th hole.

It was no surprise that MacIntyre received huge criticism for his behavior during his first round at The Masters.

It is believed that MacIntyre received a dressing down from Augusta National officials following his unacceptable behavior out on the golf course.

His actions during the first round were just yet another example of a growing problem on the PGA Tour.

The PGA Tour have to come up with a way to discourage players from losing their tempers out on the golf course.

Getting hot under the collar is fine. In fact, that is probably what has made players like MacIntyre and Tyrrell Hatton who they are today.

However, players cursing loudly while on camera and and smashing the turf with their clubs is simply not acceptable behavior.

MacIntyre’s behavior was not on, especially with so many young golf fanatics watching The Masters around the world.

However, the one positive of the Scot’s actions is that he highlighted the need for urgent change.

There have been numerous examples over the past year or so of players letting their emotions spill over on the golf course.

It really isn’t good enough that these displays of child-like behavior are going unpunished.

MacIntyre received a dressing down from Masters officials, but so what? Will that really make him stop him from losing his temper out on the golf course?

Golfers must be penalized with strokes for poor behavior on the course

Shane Lowry let his temper get the better of him at the U.S. Open in June 2025, while Cameron Young incurred the wrath of many golf fans with his petulant behavior at the Travelers Championship.

Back in May, Wyndham Clark was forced to release an apology after his actions during the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

And then incredibly, he had to do the same thing just one month later at the U.S. Open after wrecking a couple of lockers inside the Oakmont clubhouse.

Meanwhile, Justin Rose lost his temper last year at the Scottish Open, smashing his club into his golf bag after hitting a poor shot fromm a bunker.

Brooks Koepka also had his issues during LIV Golf Dallas when he smashed his driver into a tee marker during the first round at Maridoe Golf Club.

Perhaps if the PGA Tour, and all of the game’s other governing bodies for that matter, started penalizing players with strokes after their temper tantrums, it would cut the problem out immediately.

The issue has been plaguing professional golf for far too long now, and Robert MacIntyre’s behavior at The Masters proved that it will only continue to get worse if left unattended.
