Rio Ferdinand has said on his YouTube channel that Gabriel Martinelli’s goal for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League game on Sunday was correctly disallowed.

Ferdinand has said that in the modern game, in the build-up to the disallowed goal from Martinelli at Old Trafford, Arsenal star Martin Odegaard’s challenge on Manchester United ace Christian Eriksen was a foul.

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Eriksen was bundled over by Norway international attacking midfielder Odegaard just inside the Arsenal half.

Mikel Arteta’s side launched a counter-attack and scored.

Brazilian forward Martinelli was slipped through by England international midfielder Bukayo Saka, and he brilliantly clipped the ball past United goalkeeper David de Gea.

It was a brilliant goal, but it was chalked off.

VAR advised referee Paul Tierney to look at the pitch-side monitor, and he decided to disallow the goal.

Former United star Ferdinand has said that it was soft, but he believes that in the modern game, it was a foul and that the goal from Martinelli was correctly ruled off.

Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel: “I do think it’s a foul because he actually doesn’t get any of the ball. It is a little bit soft, yeah, but it is a foul. In today’s game, it’s a foul.”
