Simon Jordan has been speaking about Tottenham fans and their frustrations with Daniel Levy – he also made a comparison to Newcastle.
What’s the story?
Well, the talkSPORT pundit defended the 60-year-old amid a barrage of criticism from Spurs fans, who are frustrated at a lack of smart investment in the playing staff as rivals strengthen.
However, Jordan did also label Levy’s decision to hire Nuno Espirito Santo in June 2021 as a “ridiculous” move.
Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, the 55-year-old said: “The bottom line is that Daniel Levy could do more, when you compare him to the ownership models of other clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle, he’ll wither and die on the vine.
“I’ve criticised Daniel repeatedly, I thought it was a ridiculous decision to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo, but I also think he is a very good businessman.”
Levy may well be a fantastic businessman, and his efforts to improve the infrastructure at Tottenham – including two incredible facilities in Hotspur Way and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – deserve praise.
However, as Jordan concedes, Levy “could do more” – and needs to do more as competition at the summit of English football intensifies.
Tottenham risk slipping behind as the likes of Newcastle and Chelsea spend silly amounts to remain competitive, and while Levy cannot match those clubs financially, he can implement better policies and a clear plan.
Tottenham should look at Newcastle
In our view, Tottenham should look at Newcastle and their clever additions of Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and others.
For example, just take a glance at some of the recent transfer windows under Levy’s guidance – he does spend money, but it is not used well.
Tottenham spent a significant amount on the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon, Matt Doherty and Joe Rodon in the 2020/21 campaign, before adding Bryan Gil and Emerson Royal the following season.
Only Emerson is currently a part of Antonio Conte’s squad, and has just been replaced by the £40m Pedro Porro.
The £60m signing of Richarlison is also a questionable deal, as the Brazilian is yet to score a Premier League goal for Tottenham.
Some may blame Fabio Paratici – Director of Football at Spurs – for these deals, but the structure of the club and those employed in those roles falls on Levy, so the entire process must become more streamlined.
