Simply put, Arsenal aren’t very good at selling football players. Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Shkodran Mustafi, Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – four players who set the club back about £100 million – all left the Emirates for nothing between September 2020 and February 2021.
Willian and Danny Welbeck left for nothing too. And, if reports are to be believed, Sead Kolasinac and Mohamed Elneny could both have their contracts terminated in the January transfer window.
And if Roma had been willing to stump up £17 million for Granit Xhaka last summer, Arsenal would have also made a substantial loss on a player who joined from Borussia Monchengladbach for twice as much in 2016.
Reports suggesting Arsenal are willing to let Calum Chambers join Everton for as little as £5 million in January, then, will hardly come as a shock (The Sun).
Will Arsenal sell Calum Chambers to Everton?
Once again, the Gunners have allowed a contract to wind down to the point it feels inevitable a man who joined the club for £16 million will leave for a fraction of that fee. Or for no fee at all.
According to The Athletic, Chambers has a clause in his contract that allows Arsenal to extend his current deal for 12 months. As yet, however, the London giants haven’t taken up that option. Why is anyone’s guess?

After all, triggering that clause would allow Arsenal to demand a few million more from an Everton side that also has its sights firmly fixed on Chambers’ teammate Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Now, this feels like another situation where Arsenal should hold all the cards. Instead, they’ve been left looking vulnerable once more. Everton know Arsenal will be forced to consider cut-price bids for a player just eight months away from free agency.
It’s not too late to trigger that extension clause, though. Here’s what some Arsenal supporters on Twitter had to say about the Chambers to Everton rumours:
