Tyrese Haliburton’s recovery from a torn Achilles has taken an unexpected turn.
The Indiana Pacers guard had already been ruled out for the season as he continued his long rehabilitation process.
Now, another health issue has temporarily disrupted that progress. Head coach Rick Carlisle offered clarity on the situation over the weekend.
However, while the update adds concern in the short term, the long-term outlook remains positive.
Rick Carlisle details Tyrese Haliburton’s setback
Carlisle explained that Haliburton recently began experiencing unusual symptoms while travelling to meet the team in Washington, D.C.
After further evaluation, it was confirmed that the point guard is dealing with shingles.
“It’s a very painful thing,” Carlisle told reporters on Sunday. “He will make a full recovery, but this happened over the last few days.
“He was meeting us in D.C. and had some odd symptoms, and he came back here. That’s what’s happening with him.

“We certainly wish him a speedy recovery. It’s a unique case and a unique situation, but I talked to him a few times, and he’s always in a good mood, so he’ll get through it.”
The Pacers coach stressed that Haliburton is expected to recover fully, though shingles can be uncomfortable and disruptive.
For a player already navigating a demanding rehab schedule, it represents an unfortunate setback.
Tyrese Haliburton was already out for the season
Importantly, Haliburton was not expected to return this season regardless.
A torn Achilles typically requires a year-long recovery timeline, and the Pacers had already taken a cautious approach with their franchise cornerstone.
Indiana currently sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a dismal 15-43 record.
With no playoff push to consider, there is little incentive to rush their All-Star guard back into action. The priority remains ensuring he is fully fit for the start of next season.
Shingles may temporarily pause parts of his rehab, but it should not affect the broader long-term plan.
For a Pacers team building around Haliburton, patience is the clear strategy. The focus is on having him healthy when the new campaign tips off in October.
