Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, journalist Duncan Castles has made a claim about Frenkie De Jong after he was linked with Liverpool on Friday.
The Dutch midfielder has been at the centre of a lot of speculation this week. It has been claimed that he’s been placed on the transfer list by Barcelona, while Spanish outlet, Sport, reckon Liverpool are keen to sign him.
However, Castles is led to believe that while Barcelona do not want to sell De Jong, they would let him go if they received an exceptional offer for him.
What’s been said about De Jong?
Castles shared what he knows about the Barcelona midfielder.
“The other player who is relevant here is Frenkie De Jong. Barcelona do not want to sell him is the information I have, but they are open to selling him if they get an exceptional offer for the player because they realise they have to raise money somewhere within this squad. I asked what they thought represented an exceptional offer for De Jong, the figure that came back to me was €100m (£85m),” Castles said.
Not worth it for Liverpool
As talented as De Jong is, it has to be said that this wouldn’t be a worthwhile deal for Liverpool at this price point.
Think about it, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are both emerging as stars, while the Reds would reportedly be able to land Jude Bellingham for just £5m more.
De Jong has been inconsistent for Barcelona ever since arriving at Camp Nou and he’s untested in England.
£85m is simply too much for Liverpool to consider signing this player.
