Tottenham Hotspur are said to be keen on the Everton midfielder, but Celtic’s Armstrong, whose Parkhead deal also expires next summer, could be a cheaper alternative.

Tottenham Hotspur continue to be linked with a move for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who according to his manager will be sold if he doesn’t sign a new contract.

With little over a year to run on his existing Goodison Park deal, the summer transfer window would seem like an ideal time for Spurs to pounce on Barkley. However, according to The Mirror, the England international could still cost them upwards of £30 million.

The Toffees, it would appear, are already making plans should Barkley depart, with The Express reporting on Thursday that Celtic’s Stuart Armstrong is one player being tracked by the Merseyside club.

Armstrong is enjoying his best season yet at Celtic Park, scoring 10 goals and creating another seven in 22 league outings for Brendan Rodgers’ side. However, like Barkley, the 24-year-old will be leaving for nothing next summer as things stand.

Armstrong, though, is likely to cost far less than his Everton counterpart, by virtue of not playing his trade in a league awash with cash.

And, with many questioning the logic of Tottenham’s interest in Barkley, given they already have Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Mousa Dembele, Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks who can play as offensive midfielders, is the Celtic man not the more appropriate target?
