Not many Celtic will have impressed with the signing of Jonathan Afolabi on a free transfer this summer following his departure from Southampton, but links with Aston Villa and Crystal Palace should encourage them.

Celtic have recently secured the services of Afolabi on a two-year contract, with manager Neil Lennon suggesting that he could be used in the development team initially, as reported on BBC Sport.

The 19-year-old forward is raw and relatively inexperienced, and many fans of the Glasgow giants will understandably not be too thrilled about the teenager, but reported interested from Premier League club Villa and Southampton prior to his switch to Celtic Park should encourage the Celtic Park faithful.

According to Football.London, Palace made an offer to Afolabi and his representatives to sign him on a free transfer, while Villa took a close look at the youngster.

Palace and Villa would not have been (reportedly) interested in the 19-year-old had they not seen his talent, and that should be encouraging for Celtic fans.
