Ask every Liverpool fan what the club needs to do in this January transfer window and most would point towards the team’s need for a new midfielder.

The Reds’ midfield has struggled this season. Fabinho’s levels have dropped substantially, while fitness issues have affected the likes of Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara.

For that reason, Liverpool have been linked with a plethora of new midfielders in recent months including Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

Rumours have been rampant about both of these players for quite some time now, but according to The Athletic, there is nothing to read into here.

Indeed, according to this report, senior Anfield sources have rubbished the links to both Caicedo and Fernandez.

The Athletic are usually spot on with their reporting, so there is reason to believe that these links to Caicedo and Fernandez may not go anywhere, but, then again, we have heard this before.

Indeed, just before Thiago Alcantara arrived on Merseyside we heard plenty of reports regarding people within Anfield writing off those rumours, and then, all of a sudden, the deal was done.

Liverpool are the masters of working in the shadows when it comes to transfers.

Cody Gakpo signed from out of nowhere over the Christmas period, while we’ve also seen deals for the likes of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez accelerate from being tenuous links to done deals within a matter of hours in the past.

Liverpool love nothing more than to leave their fans in the dark when it comes to incoming transfers, and while these rumours are currently being denied, the Reds are known to throw out a few smokescreens and diversions at this time of year.
