Liverpool will reportedly match any offers made by rival clubs for Enzo Fernandez in an attempt to sign the Benfica superstar, with the Reds closing in on the midfielder’s signature.

According to O Jogo, the Reds are keen to add the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalist to their ranks in the January transfer window, with Liverpool now going as far to match any offer Fernandez receives in the coming weeks.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been one of the breakout stars in Qatar this winter as Argentina prepare to take on Croatia tonight in the World Cup semi-finals, where Fernandez is expected to once again start for the South American giants.

With a reported release clause of €120m (£103m), Liverpool could have to break their club-record transfer to land Fernandez in January, especially if Jurgen Klopp’s side are now eager to match any offers rival clubs might make for the midfielder.

Indeed, Fernandez has only been playing in Europe for a few months as Benfica won the race to sign the midfielder from River Plate this summer, yet the youngster could now be set to leave Portugal for Liverpool as interest continues to increase for the 21-year-old.

Central midfield is a position many Liverpool fans have identified as an area of weakness, and this latest update on Fernandez is exactly what some supporters would have wanted to hear ahead of the January window opening in a few weeks time.

Fernandez arrived in Lisbon this summer as already one of South America’s most exciting talents, and the midfielder has only seen his reputation sky-rocket over the past few weeks based on the youngster’s performances in Qatar, with Liverpool now set to benefit.

Winning the race for Fernandez could be one of the biggest and best deals of 2023, and for Liverpool, adding a superstar talent like the Argentine will massively improve the squad as well as given Klopp a much-needed boost for the second-half of the season.
