According to Sky Sports, West Ham have now made a bid to sign Thilo Kehrer, who Arsenal wanted in 2021.
What’s the story?
Well, it was said that Arsenal offered Paris Saint-Germain a sum of £8m to sign the defender last year.
Sadly for the Gunners, a move never materialised, but West Ham have now made a bid of their own for the Germany international.
Sky Sports do not disclose the amount of the offer, although we aren’t expecting it to be a large amount, given the fact he has already entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Parc des Princes.
The Daily Mail have stated that PSG want a fee in the region of £17m for the man they spent £33m on in 2018.
David Moyes had just one fit centre-back for the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, with Nayef Aguerd and Craig Dawson out injured, while Angelo Ogbonna continues his recovery from a serious knee injury.
Kehrer is keen to leave Paris, as he aims to be included in Germany’s starting XI for the World Cup in November.
The 25-year-old made 34 appearances in all competitions last season, although a lot of those came as a substitute.
Sky Sports add that West Ham have other options if they cannot agree a deal for the centre-back, who can also operate as a right-back.
West Ham could get a bargain in Thilo Kehrer
In our view, Kehrer is definitely worth picking up if West Ham can get him for under £15m.
The PSG No.24 features regularly for Germany, one of the best footballing nations on the planet, while it also speaks volumes that PSG spent £33m to sign him when he was just 21 years of age.
Kehrer has simply lost his way in Paris, but if he rediscovers his best form in east London, there is no reason why his value won’t return to the region of £35m, especially as his best years remain ahead of him.
European football expert Andy Brassell told Sky Sports: “I think it would be great for West Ham. He’s a player that has looked decent at PSG without setting the world alight, but he’s outperformed a lot of expectations particularly in the last year-and-a-half when they’ve been really trying to get rid of him.”
Of course, nobody wants an injury crisis in defence, but if it means West Ham pick Kehrer up for a bargain sum, it may be a blessing in disguise.
