A report emanating from Germany today claims that the Saints and Hammers can sign Hamburg forward Nicolai Müller for somewhere between €8-10 million (£7-8.7 million) in January, according to German media outlet Sport Bild.

Both Southampton and West Ham were interested in signing the 30-year-old in the summer, but failed to get a deal over the line for the pacey winger.

He has barely featured in the Bundesliga for Hamburg this season, making just one appearance, and with his club experiencing financial difficulties, Sport Bild suggest that he could be sold to either the Saints or the Hammers for somewhere in the region of £7-9 million.

That would represent quite the bargain in today’s ludicrously inflated transfer market, so it would be no surprise to see either club make an offer for the German in January.

There will be questions raised, however, as to whether Müller possesses the physical attributes to succeed in England.

He stands at just under 5ft 7in, and the robust nature of the Premier League might just prove to be too taxing for him.

Nevertheless, there will be only one way to find out, and with the opening of the January transfer window just around the corner, this will certainly be one for Southampton and West Ham fans to keep an eye on.
