Rumoured Arsenal and Celtic target Josh Doig is reportedly on the verge of joining Serie A side Hellas Verona, a surprise decision given how likely it looked that the defender would sign for a Premier League club.

According to the Scottish Sun, the Italian team have agreed a fee with Hibernian for the 20-year-old fullback just one year after Doig was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal and Celtic, with both British giants interested in the signing the left-back after a breakout year in Scotland.

Since then, Doig has continued to impress in the Scottish Premiership, and the fullback is set to make a similar move that Aaron Hickey made with the former Hearts star signing for Bologna despite huge interest in the Premier League, who recently returned to the United Kingdom with Brentford.

Hailed as an ‘unbelievable’ talent by former Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Macey, Doig is regarded by many as one of Scotland’s top talents, yet it’s still a surprise that the defender is seemingly close to signing for Verona given how strong interest was from the Gunners and Celtic.

Indeed, Verona finished ninth last season in Serie A and could be set for another strong year, and for Doig, the move does actually make some sense given the success of Hickey with Bologna as well as how well other English players have impressed in Italy.

Fikayo Tomori was a star for AC Milan as the Rossoneri won the Serie A title, and for Doig, the soon-to-be Verona signing could be perfect for the Italian game given his immense success for one of Scotland’s top sides in Hibernian.

Doig has long been viewed as a player with the potential to play for some of the best in Europe, which is why the likes of Arsenal and Celtic missing out on signing the defender this summer to Verona is such a blow to the Premier League and Scottish giants.

After all, Verona are signing a quality player with the potential to become one of the world’s best in his position, and for Arsenal and Celtic, they could now be in a position where they have to spend over the odds in the next few years to bring Doig back to Britain.
