Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter that Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are now facing real competition from Borussia Dortmund for Reims striker Hugo Ekitike.

The well-known and well-respected journalist has claimed that Newcastle have been chasing Ekitike since January, and that the striker is the Magpies’ “top target”.

German club Dortmund are “now pushing” for the French striker, according to Romano, as they need to find a replacement for Manchester City-bound Erling Haaland.

Worry for Newcastle regarding Borussia Dortmund’s Hugo Ekitike interest

In our opinion, Newcastle should really worry about competition from Dortmund for Reims striker Ekitike.

We have covered reports claiming that the 19-year-old wants to join Newcastle and is eager to work with their head coach Howe.

However, if Dortmund try hard, then they could well change his mind.

Dortmund will have funds from the sale of Haaland, and they could also be able to convince Ekitike that they would be able to elevate his status as the replacement for the Norway international striker.

The Reims no. 22 has scored nine goals and given three assists in 14 Ligue 1 starts this season.

It will be interesting to see if Ekitike joins Newcastle or Dortmund this summer.
