According to the Independent, Tottenham are interested in signing Alex Meret as they search for a long-term Hugo Lloris replacement.

What’s the story?

Well, Tottenham are on the hunt for an heir to the Frenchman’s throne, and have identified four options to succeed Lloris.

The Independent believe Aston Villa glovesman Emiliano Martinez is also on the list, as well as West Brom’s Sam Johnstone.

Real Sociedad shot-stopper Alex Remiro is another option.

The Independent claim that Tottenham understand it will be difficult to prise Martinez away from Villa Park, as he’s unlikely to force a move.

In that respect, Meret could be a likelier option than people think.

The 2-cap Italy international has made four appearances for Napoli this season, keeping two clean sheets while conceding just four goals.

Would Alex Meret succeed at Tottenham?

In our view, Meret would be a fine addition to Tottenham’s squad.

The 24-year-old became one of the most expensive goalkeepers in history when Napoli paid £30m to sign him from Udinese in 2018.

Meret – who Carlo Ancelotti once called a ‘special‘ goalkeeper – has kept 55 clean sheets throughout his career in 171 appearances.

He was also part of the Italy squad crowned victorious at EURO 2020 back in the summer – it was the third trophy of his career.

Meret has also won the Coppa Italia and the Serie B title.

At 24, the Italian is yet to reach his prime years, which is a scary prospect as he’s already performing at a very high level.

If Tottenham lured him to N17, he could be their No.1 for the next decade.
