According to Bild, Tottenham are in regular contact with Borussia Monchengladbach over a deal for Jonas Hofmann.

What’s the story?

Well, it was Bild who claimed earlier this year that Spurs wanted to sign the Germany international, and now, they provide some updates.

The German news outlet explain how Rolan Virkus – Director of Football at Borussia Monchengladbach – wants Hofmann to sign a new contract.

However, the 29-year-old believes he is ready to make a step up, and therefore is keen to leave the Bundesliga side.

Hofmann’s current terms expire in June 2023, so this summer will be Borussia Monchengladbach’s last chance to make good money from a sale.

So far this season, the Tottenham target has scored 10 goals in all competitions, while also providing five assists.

If Spurs are to be successful in their pursuit of Hofmann, they must fend off competition from Diego Simeone and Atlético Madrid.

In that respect, Conte has to secure Champions League football.

The Spaniards are currently sat fourth in La Liga, and will be a far more attractive destination if they qualify for the tournament and Spurs do not.

Jonas Hofmann would improve Tottenham

In our view, despite the signing of Dejan Kulusevski, Spurs need more depth across the frontline.

Antonio Conte clearly doesn’t have much faith in Steven Bergwijn or Lucas Moura, so some fresh faces are needed in the attacking department.

In fact, Tottenham are said to be willing to sell Bergwijn, with Manchester United interested.

If you’re wondering what type of player Hofmann is, then the Bundesliga’s official website made an interesting comparison.

They likened the Spurs target to Borussia Dortmund icon Marco Reus, a man who has scored 153 goals in 354 games for the German giants.

If Hofmann has even a fraction of the Borussia Dortmund star’s ability, then Tottenham should do all they can to sign him.

Keep an eye on this saga, as it will be interesting to see if Spurs can beat Atlético Madrid to the wantaway forward’s signature.
