According to Football London, Tottenham are open to offers for Matt Doherty on deadline day despite the fact he only joined the club one year ago.
The Irishman hasn’t been a rousing success at Spurs, and while he has been reunited with his former manager Nuno Espirito Santo, it seems as though he is surplus to requirements.
With Japhet Tanganga emerging as a brilliant option at right-back and Emerson Royal seemingly set to join, there isn’t space in the squad for the former Wolves man.
Doherty is by no means a bad player, and the 29-year-old labelled by Graeme Souness as a ‘workaholic’ would be a real asset to a number of sides.
Of course, just because Spurs are open to offers doesn’t mean he’s going to be leaving before the window closes. A lot of this hinges on finding a buyer.
Luckily for Spurs, there are a number of clubs in England in need of a new right-back. Everton have been chasing Ainsley Maitland-Niles to no avail, so perhaps that’s an option, while Doherty is a boyhood Arsenal fan and the Gunners also need to bolster that position.
There are going to be so many stories that develop on deadline day, and as ever, this could be one that goes right down to the wire.
Keep your eye on Doherty’s situation as the window draws to a close and clubs get more and more desperate.
