Graeme Souness has raved about Tottenham Hotspur summer signing Matt Doherty in The Irish Mirror.

The Liverpool legend, who could not get into the first team at Tottenham early in his career, believes that Doherty will be a success at Spurs.

The 28-year-old, who can operate as a right-back or as a right wing-back, recently joined Tottenham from Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer transfer window.

Souness told The Irish Mirror about Doherty: “I haven’t worked with Jose but it’s a very simplistic view to point the finger at him and say he’s a negative coach, he isn’t.

“I think in the bigger games he’ll have a more pragmatic approach, but he tries to go on the front foot and go for it and I think Doherty will enjoy playing for him.

“He’s a workaholic and I like him very much. With (Pierre-Emile) Höjbjerg, the other one he’s signed, they’ll be better in there in midfield next season so I wouldn’t worry if I was Doherty, he can play the same game.

“He’s bought him because he sees him box to box, gets there, delivers, chips in with a goal. There’s a lot to like about Doherty in the modern game in that system.”

Good signing for Tottenham Hotspur?

Doherty is a very good right-back who did well during his time at Wolves and is a smart signing for Tottenham.

Serge Aurier is a good right-back, but the Ivory Coast international has not always done well defensively.

Doherty is good both going on the attack and defensively, and he is likely to go straight into the Spurs starting lineup.

Tottenham had a disappointing 2019-20 season and will be determined to finish in the top four of the Premier League table in 2020-21.

It is going to be hard for Spurs to clinch a Champions League place, but with Jose Mourinho in charge, anything is possible.
