According to Football London, Tottenham Hotspur are considered favourites to sign Sam Johnstone from West Brom this summer when his contract expires.
The Baggies’ goalkeeper is very much in demand at the moment, he’s been linked strongly with both West Ham and Rangers, but now it’s Spurs who are on pole position to bring in the England international.
Tottenham are in the market for a new goalie this summer, and according to reports last year, Antonio Conte wants a homegrown stopper through the door.
Jordan Pickford was linked, but with Johnstone being available on a free, this would arguably be the smarter signing – especially after Hugo Lloris signed his new contract.
Pierluigi Gollini seemingly won’t be sticking around beyond this season, it’s now impossible for him to accrue enough appearances for his permanent transfer clause to be triggered, and after sitting on the bench for a year, he probably won’t be staying.
Johnstone will be able to compete with Lloris to be Spurs’ number one, and while he may eventually be condemned to being a backup, this is a player that is more than good enough to play in the Premier League. After all, he was described as ‘top quality’ by Sam Allardyce last year.
Johnstone would be an excellent addition to the Spurs squad, and on a free, this would be an absolute bargain.
