Tottenham and Brentford have reportedly missed out on the signing of 20-year-old Gremio defender Vanderson to Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.

According to Le 10 Sport, the Brazilian youngster has agreed to a move to the south of France despite interest from the two London clubs. As per the report, Brentford were close to signing Vanderson after originally striking a deal with Gremio.

However, Monaco have edged out over the west London side with Vanderson said to be more interested in playing for the Ligue 1 giants. As per the report, Gremio will receive €14m (£12m) for the defender.

Labelled as ‘strong’ by the Daily Mail, missing out on Vanderson will be a blow for both Tottenham and Brentford. Already a Brazilian international, the youngster is regarded as one of the top defensive talents in South America.

Indeed, there were many reports that the Bees had agreed a deal to sign Vanderson, whilst Brazilian publication UOL reported the ‘extraordinary talent’ was wanted by Tottenham in the summer transfer window.

However, it is Monaco who have won the race for the defender. The French side currently sit eighth in the Ligue 1 table, with Niko Kovac’s side eager to finish in a European spot this season.

At 20 and already a Brazilian international, Vanderson is a player who could go far if he continues his development in Europe. And for both Brentford and Spurs, they could regret not signing the talented defender.

For £12m, the prospect could have been an excellent addition to either side, and at such a young age, Vanderson has time to develop into the Premier League and hopefully flourish into a top player for the division.
