Spain are now considering a move for Roberto Martinez – who Everton want to replace Frank Lampard – after their shock World Cup exit.
That is according to Belgian news outlet Nieuwsblad, who believe the 49-year-old is an option to replace Luis Enrique after Spain suffered defeat to Morocco in their Round of 16 clash on Tuesday.
What’s the story?
Well, it was another Belgian news outlet in Het Belang van Limburg who revealed that Everton are considering an approach for Martinez, amid doubts over Lampard’s suitability for the job.
The Toffees currently find themselves 17th in the Premier League, with just three wins from 15 league outings so far this season.
As a result, Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright are thinking about making a move for Martinez, who was sacked from his role at Goodison Park back in 2016.
The Belgian ended up taking over the Belgium national team after losing his job on Merseyside, guiding them to the No.1 world ranking as well as third place at the 2018 World Cup.

Unfortunately, things ended on a sour note as Belgium failed to progress from Group F at the World Cup in Qatar, with Martinez announcing his exit immediately after full-time.
That made things a bit easier for Everton – if they really do plan to make an approach – although the situation will become a lot more complicated if Spain decide to make contact with Martinez.
Everton shouldn’t fight for Roberto Martinez
In our view, the Belgian is not worth wrestling with Spain over.
Of course, if Spain decide to abandon their interest, and Martinez is free to be hired with no competition, then Everton should definitely make a move if Lampard continues to struggle.
However, if others make the situation difficult, the Toffees should search for alternative options – such as Sean Dyche – just in case Lampard fails to turn the situation around.
Be sure to keep an eye on Martinez, as it remains to be seen where he will end up.
