Southampton are already plotting a move to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone for free at the end of the season.
That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that the Saints are already making plans for their 2022 summer transfer window.
One of the key positions Southampton want to strengthen is in goal, with Fraser Forster set to leave the club when his contract expires next summer.
Alex McCarthy has extended his stay with the club, but the Saints still need to find another stopper – especially as the signing of Angus Gunn just didn’t work.
The Saints aren’t exactly big spenders, but may have a bargain signing in mind with Johnstone now wanted on the South Coast.
Johnstone is believed to be ‘high up’ on Southampton’s list of targets for the role given that his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old will be able to move for absolutely nothing, and having impressed in the Premier League last season, it’s no surprise that he’s now attracting major interest.
West Ham United made a cash bid for Johnstone this past summer, but had their bid rejected by West Brom and ended up signing Alphonse Areola instead.
Southampton may now feel that they are in the box seat to sign Johnstone, though waiting until next summer does leave them open to more clubs becoming interested and moving to sign him.
