Real Sociedad are set to sign former Tottenham target Alexander Sorloth on loan for a second season as a replacement for Alexander Isak, who this week joined Newcastle United for a club-record transfer fee.
According to Bild, the Norway international is already undergoing a medical with the La Liga side ahead of his return to the Basque Country, with Sorloth set to sign for Sociedad on loan for a second year without an option to buy despite Isak’s recent £63m departure to Newcastle.
A reported target for Tottenham last year, Sorloth bagged eight goals in all competitions for Sociedad after joining the club on loan from RB Leipzig, where the 26-year-old attacker has struggled to adapt to life in the Bundesliga despite being a reliable goalscorer elsewhere.
Although Sociedad more than have the funds to sign Sorloth on a permanent deal, the La Liga side have decided to just bring the forward in loan for another year, with a decision on the Scandinavian’s future likely to be decided next year at the end of this new loan spell.
Indeed, the decision from Daniel Levy to not sign Sorloth in 2021 has seemingly paid off, with the attacker failing to match the goal tallies both Harry Kane and Heung-min Son hit last season for Tottenham, with the forward pair a key reason behind Spurs’ top-four finish last campaign.
With Antonio Conte this summer bringing Richarlison in from Everton, Tottenham’s attacking depth is arguably the best it has been in some years, and Sorloth’s latest loan move to Sociedad is a testament to where the striker currently is in his career.
Sociedad signing Sorloth is a solid replacement for Isak
Whilst Sorloth never made it to Tottenham, replacing Isak at Sociedad is a smart move from the La Liga side given the similarities between the Norweigian and the Swede, with the former Crystal Palace star ready to impress in his second year in Spain.
Eight goals last season is a solid return for the Nordic striker, and with no Isak to share the starting attacking role with, Sorloth has the potential to really come into his own at Sociedad this season, and the forward could make a huge impact this campaign if he can return to form sooner rather than later.
