According to the Guardian, Newcastle are now closing in on a £30m move for Diego Carlos, after the Premier League side had two bids rejected.
What’s the story?
Well, this is significant news for the Magpies.
The Guardian believe the 28-year-old could even make his debut for Newcastle against Leeds on Saturday.
For that to happen, the deal will need to be completed before Friday afternoon, which is looking likely to happen.
Sevilla had been holding firm, although advanced negotiations began after Diego Carlos submitted a transfer request to force the move through.
Now, a £30m deal is in the latter stages.
Fabrizio Romano has even revealed that personal terms have been agreed with the 6-cap Brazil international, so all that remains is for the towering centre-back to undergo a medical.
Sevilla will be losing a key man. So far this season, the South American has made 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals.
Is Diego Carlos the answer for Newcastle?

It remains to be seen how the Sevilla No.20 adapts to the Premier League, although the signs are certainly promising.
Liverpool have been strongly linked with Diego Carlos in recent times, which in itself offers encouragement given their near faultless recruitment.
The Newcastle target is also a man of Champions League pedigree, having made 14 appearances in what is known as Europe’s greatest club competition.
He has also made eight Europa League appearances, and won the competition in 2020.

In our view, the big question mark is whether or not Diego Carlos will adapt in time to have an impact on Newcastle’s hunt for survival.
If he takes months to settle, it could be a serious issue for Eddie Howe.
Nevertheless, it seems to be an outstanding signing on paper, and also addresses an area of the squad in need of reinforcements.
Only time will tell if Diego Carlos succeeds on Tyneside.
