According to the Evening Standard, Antonio Conte is close to finalising his sixth signing of the summer, as a deal for Djed Spence nears completion.
The 21-year-old had a medical at Hotspur Way this morning, and if all goes well, he will put pen to paper on a five-year contract to seal his £12.5m move from Middlesbrough.
Interestingly, the Evening Standard also mention what Conte plans to do after the signing of Spence is confirmed.
What’s the story?
Well, the Italian is hoping to sign a creative attacker before the transfer window closes.
That would explain interest in re-signing Christian Eriksen, although the Denmark international has now signed for Manchester United after also rejecting Newcastle and Everton.
Spurs also made attempts to sign Atlético Madrid attacker Rodrigo De Paul this summer, although the Argentina international turned down a move to north London.
Tottenham have also been credited with an interest in Paulo Dybala, who is available on a free transfer after his contract at Juventus expired.
Clearly, Spurs are serious about finding a new source of creativity to supply Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, although there is yet to be any serious progress made in signing one.
After Djed Spence arrival, Tottenham should look at Bryan Gil
In our view, Conte has a creative attacker right under his nose in Bryan Gil.
The Spanish wonderkid was only signed from Sevilla last summer in a deal worth £21.6m, plus Erik Lamela.
That represents a significant investment from Daniel Levy, although the 21-year-old made just eight appearances under Conte before being loaned to Valencia.
Things went well at the Mestalla for Gil, as supporters begged him to stay, while he also earned comparisons to Lionel Messi.
In our view, he deserves a chance at Tottenham as a result of his hard work in Valencia.
Ultimately, if Gil can start to make an impact in English football, he would solve Conte’s search for a creative source, while also saving Spurs millions in the transfer market.
