Newcastle United are interested in signing Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale but he is seen as a long-term target rather than for January.

Nick Pope’s injury is unlikely to tempt Newcastle United into making a January move for Arsenal stopper Aaron Ramsdale.

That is according to 90Min, who claim that Newcastle may stick with what they have after seeing Nick Pope go down with injury.

Pope suffered a dislocated shoulder against Manchester United on Saturday and now faces months on the sidelines.

That is an enormous blow for Newcastle and Eddie Howe must now weigh up whether to move for a new goalkeeper in January.

Newcastle United unlikely to move for Aaron Ramsdale in January

90Min now claim that Newcastle are unlikely to sign a new goalkeeper.

That means Newcastle will likely call upon Martin Dubravka, Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie moving forward.

The report notes that Newcastle like Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale but view him as more of a long-term target.

Arsenal aren’t exactly pushing to sell Ramsdale in January despite benching him for David Raya this season.

Newcastle would seemingly make any move for Ramsdale at the end of the season and not in the January window.

Eddie Howe knows all about Ramsdale’s quality

There is a clear connection between Newcastle and Ramsdale – boss Eddie Howe.

Howe signed Ramsdale for Bournemouth back in 2017 and gave him his Premier League debut.

Howe has been a big fan of the England international, telling TalkSPORT in 2020 that he thinks Ramsdale is an ‘exceptional’ goalkeeper.

‘Exceptional’ is a word which seems to follow Ramsdale with Mikel Arteta using the same word to describe him back in September.

Ramsdale can’t risk sitting on the Arsenal bench for much longer and if Newcastle want him in the summer, he will surely jump at the move to play under Howe again – even if he has to compete with Pope.
