RB Leipzig are reportedly confident that they can win the race to sign Chelsea misfit Timo Werner, with Newcastle United also interested in the Germany international.
According to Sky Sports News, the Bundesliga side are ‘increasingly confident’ they can re-sign their former striker this summer, with Werner open to returning to Leipzig ahead of the new season, though as per the report, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is eager to keep the £45m attacker in west London.
Werner remains Chelsea’s only natural striker in the senior squad, and whilst Kai Havertz is likely to lead the line for the Blues, having that option in the 26-year-old remains key, though as per Sky Sports News, Leipzig and the attacker are keen to get a deal done in the coming weeks.
Leipzig aren’t alone in their interest in Werner, though, with Newcastle reportedly also in the race to sign the former Bundesliga superstar, with Eddie Howe eager to improve his attacking options and to also seemingly land a superstar recruit this summer, with the Chelsea star a player who more than fits the bill.
Whilst Newcastle have solid attacking options in Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin, Werner would bring that extra something that the Magpies are currently missing from their forward players, but with Leipzig cranking up the pressure to sign the German, the northeast Premier league side could now miss out on the Chelsea forward.
Indeed, with the 2022 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Werner rejoining Leipzig makes a lot of sense given how successful the striker has been in the Bundesliga, and whilst Newcastle would be an exciting challenge, the attacker is making a smart decision to return to Germany ahead of Qatar.
Newcastle must eye other targets with Werner set to sign for Leipzig

Werner was always going to be a hard deal to pull off for Newcastle, and with Leipzig now well in the race to sign the striker, Howe would be making a smart decision looking at other targets in the final month of the transfer window to bolster his attacking options.
After all, Newcastle need an extra body in the forward role for the new season, and whilst Werner would have been an exciting and interesting option for the Toon, Leipzig is simply too perfect a move for the German striker, who is in need of a return to form ahead of the World Cup.
