Newcastle United want Timo Werner and suddenly have hope of pulling off a deal after opening talks to beat RB Leipzig.
The Magpies played their final pre-season game on Saturday afternoon, beating Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at St James’ Park.
This was a real boost for Eddie Howe as he saw two of his attacking players – Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin – get on the scoresheet.
Much has been made of Newcastle’s need for new wingers and strikers, and Howe may still target a big signing or two even after seeing Saint-Maximin and Wilson score.
Newcastle United want Timo Werner
Top targets like Moussa Diaby and Alexander Isak haven’t been easy to sign whilst Hugo Ekitike joined Paris Saint-Germain instead.
That means Newcastle are looking elsewhere and Chelsea striker Werner could emerge as an important target.
Werner, 26, has been hailed as ‘brilliant’ by teammate Mason Mount but has only scored 10 goals in 56 Premier League games.
The Mirror report that Newcastle are now in talks with Chelsea over signing Werner on loan for the 2022-23 season.
It’s stated that whilst Werner’ former club RB Leipzig are also keen, Werner is desperate to shine in the Premier League.

That means Newcastle now have real belief of securing Werner’s signature – but it will take a favour from Chelsea.
Werner earns around £270,000-a-week at Chelsea and Newcastle could need the Blues to pay a huge chunk of those wages.
This may not be the worst idea from Chelsea’s perspective; Newcastle are bound to pose a threat to every top six club next season with nobody looking forward to facing them.
Chelsea could effectively unleash Werner on all of them without having to risk facing him themselves, potentially helping them in the battle for European places.
That’s something for Chelsea to think about, with Newcastle seemingly very serious about signing the German international this summer.
