The Telegraph reported this morning that Tottenham Hotspur had agreed a deal in principle for Nuno Espirito Santo to become their new head coach.
Spurs have been without a manager since firing Jose Mourinho way back in April.
And it appears that a deal with Nuno is close – and very close now, if a report from Spain is true.
According to AS, Tottenham appointing Nuno is just one step away.
The Spanish publication reports that the former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss – a goalkeeper during his playing career – will sign a two-year contract in North London.
Lack of faith
This is a much bigger deal for Nuno than it is for Tottenham.
The Portuguese coach is hardly an amateur and has had successful spells with Wolves and Valencia in the past.
But he’s replacing the most successful Portuguese coach in history – Mourinho – and therefore it’s a massive opportunity for him, but less so for the Lilywhites.
If Daniel Levy gives him a two-year contract, it perhaps indicates a lack of faith from the club’s hierarchy.
After all, Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino would’ve been given longer deals had they wound up replacing Mourinho.
Two years suggests that Levy isn’t really sure about Nuno, which we know already because he seems like a last resort, a response to botched moves for Pochettino, Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso.
