According to The Athletic, Callum Wilson has returned to Newcastle carrying a muscle injury after his World Cup exploits.

Wilson, of course, has been in Qatar over the past few weeks representing England, and he had a decent time of it over in the middle east.

Yes, he saw limited minutes, but when he did play he was fantastic. He grabbed an assist against Iran in the first game, and did his job well whenever he came off the bench.

Sadly, Wilson didn’t feature in the knockout rounds, but now we have an explanation as to why Gareth Southgate was hesitant to use the striker.

Indeed, Wilson’s muscle injury was apparently picked up towards the back end of England’s World Cup campaign, and that explains why he wasn’t used against France or Senegal.

Luckily for Newcastle United, this issue is described as minor, and it is thought that Wilson will be back before too long.

Described as ‘powerful’ by Alan Shearer earlier this year, the striker has been in red hot form this season, hence his inclusion in England’s World Cup squad, and if he can keep up that form going into 2023, there’s no reason why the Magpies can’t dream about a place in the Champions League.

Sadly though, these types of small knocks are far too common for Wilson, and as sad as it is to say, it wouldn’t be surprising if this isn’t the last injury he has this season.

Fortunately, the Magpies’ club-record signing, Alexander Isak, should be back in action before too long, and his recovery will give the Tyneside club a lot more depth up top.
