Alan Shearer has included Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson in his Premier League Team of the Week, branding the England star as “powerful” and claimed that the Toon star gave Aston Villa ace Tyrone Mings a “torrid” time.
Wilson, 30, strengthened his claims for a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad on Saturday. Newcastle cruised to a 4-0 win over Aston Villa. Wilson nabbed two of his side’s four goals, taking his tally to six goals in nine games.
With the race to provide cover for Harry Kane at the World Cup hotting up, Wilson is right in the frame. Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham were called-up in the previous break, while Marcus Rashford and Dom Calvert-Lewin have a chance.
Shearer named his Premier League Team of the Week, including Wilson. He also named manager Eddie Howe, as well as Toon stars Miguel Almiron, Kieran Trippier and Joelinton. Shearer praised Wilson for terrorising £26.5m Mings.

“Two goals and an assist in front of Southgate sent out a powerful message. He gave Tyrone Mings a torrid time,” Shearer said, when delivering his verdict on the ex-Bournemouth striker following his brace against Villa on Tyneside.
Shearer: Powerful Newcastle striker Wilson gave Mings a torrid time
Wilson was sensational, and he has pretty much put one hand on a place in the World Cup squad. That being, despite his last England cap coming back in October 2019. He has a bit of everything, but he just needs to remain injury free.
If he continues to score goals in the rate he is doing so, then Wilson will get a place in the World Cup squad. He could just provide England with the perfect plan B to fire them towards the last rounds of the tournament in Qatar.
