Chelsea are on the brink of signing USA international Gabriel Slonina, a player Fabrizio Romano has previously claimed that Wolves were interested in this summer.
According to the Daily Mail, the Blues are set to make the teenage American goalkeeper their first signing in the Todd Boehly era after a few weeks of the deal looking potentially deal, with Slonina set to sign for Chelsea and then return to the Chicago Fire for the remainder of the season.
As reported by Romano, Wolves were also interested in Slonina, along with Real Madrid, yet it looks like the Molineux side have been beaten by their Premier League rivals for the talented American shot-stopper, who has been one of the standout youngsters in MLS this year.
The 18-year-old keeper has been tipped for a huge future after establishing himself as the Fire’s no. 1 shot-stopper last season, and remaining in MLS is ideal for Slonina’s development, with Eduaord Mendy Chelsea’s clear starting talent between the sticks as the Blues look to offload Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Indeed, Wolves landed on a coup last summer in Jose Sa, however, Slonina could have been a fantastic backup to the Portuguese international with Bruno Lage looking to get the Premier League side back into Europe after a disappointing end to last season.
Missing out on Slonina will hurt for Wolves, especially since there is a strong chance that the promising American might never actually feature for Chelsea given how the Blues’ loan army has seen many talented players join the west London side and never made a single appearance despite spending years at the club.
Slonina is taking a big risk signing for Chelsea over Wolves

The Premier League is the dream for many American players, and for Slonina, the teenager has reached this goal with his move to Chelsea just days away from being announced. However, the goalkeeper is making an almighty risk signing for the English giants over Wolves.
As we know, Slonina is returning to Chicago for the remainder of the MLS season, and after that, there is a good chance that the Polish-American could spend the next few years out on loan from west London, a tale that is seemingly as old as time for the the Blues.
