According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United are confident that they’re going to win the race for Anthony Gordon’s signature.

In fact, it sounds as though the Magpies are closing in on signing the ‘phenomenal’ Everton ace.

The Telegraph claim that Gordon is expected to travel up to Tyneside this week before sealing a move to St James’ Park.

Of course, as we all know, no deal is done until it is announced, but it sounds as though the noises coming out of Newcastle seem to suggest that Gordon will be playing in black and white soon enough.

Talks have progressed in recent days, and while Chelsea are keen on the youngster, Newcastle are led to believe that the Blues will not outbid them for the Everton star.

At the age of just 21, Gordon has plenty of room to grow, and Newcastle will certainly be hoping that Eddie Howe can work his magic and help this player kick on.

Gordon has shown glimpses of being an infinitely talented footballer, but far too often he fails to put everything together and make an impact for Everton – hence why the Toffees are in the bottom three right now.

However, if there’s any manager who can get the best out of Gordon, it’s Howe.

As we’ve seen with the likes of Miguel Almiron and Joelinton, Howe knows how to harness the talents of players like this, and regardless of whether or not Gordon becomes a superstar on Tyneside, he’s at least going to be an upgrade on Ryan Fraser.

As for Everton, the sale of Gordon should provide their new manager with the funds needed to bolster the rest of the squad, but who that manager will be and who Everton end up signing remains to be seen.
