According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United’s pursuit of Dominic Calvert-Lewin is all-but over after Everton slapped a £60m price tag on the striker.
Newcastle have been strongly linked with a move for Calvert-Lewin over the past few months, but after the Toffees secured their Premier League status for another season, it looks like the England striker won’t be moving to Tyneside.
Calvert-Lewin is a fantastic player, and now, there is no pressure for the Toffees to sell their star man after beating the drop.
That isn’t to say that Calvert-Lewin won’t be leaving this summer. The striker has also been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, and with the Gunners desperate for a new striker they may be willing to cough up the £60m required to get the striker out of Goodison Park.
Newcastle may be the richest club in the world these days, but they’re savvy operators who won’t be held to ransom, especially after the appointment of Dan Ashworth as the club’s Sporting Director.
Luckily for the Magpies, there are plenty more fish in the sea. Links to Hugo Ekitike are persisting, while Gabriel Jesus is reportedly a player that Eddie Howe’s men have looked at.
Newcastle may not be signing Everton’s ‘great athlete’ this summer, but don’t be shocked if a top-class number nine heads to St James’ Park this summer.
As for Calvert-Lewin, there will be other interested parties, but after scoring just five league goals this season, it’s hard to imagine many clubs lining up to take him, especially at £60m.
