According to The Times, Newcastle United are prepared to break their club-record in terms of wages in order to bring Jesse Lingard to St James’ Park.

Miguel Almiron is reportedly the highest-paid player in Newcastle history with the Paraguayan apparently picking up £100k-a-week, but the Magpies are willing to offer Lingard an even higher salary.

Lingard is currently reportedly on £75,000-a-week at Manchester United, so a move to the north-east may well appeal to the England international.

The Magpies would be getting a brilliant player if they manage to pull this one off. He made a massive impact at West Ham last season, while Jamie Carragher labelled him as ‘similar to Dimitar Berbatov’ after a piece of brilliant skill against Wolves last season.

Newcastle certainly need more goals from their midfield, and if they can bring Lingard to the club, he’d be a real asset.

The Times claim that United are willing to pay a substantial fee for the 28-year-old in January, but it remains to be seen how much he will cost.

Unfortunately for Eddie Howe’s side, Newcastle aren’t the only team in for Lingard.

Indeed, West Ham and Tottenham have also been strongly linked, and while Newcastle may be rich, the Hammers and Spurs can offer the chance to play in Europe next season, while there’s every chance that Lingard could end up playing Championship football if he heads to St James’ Park.

This certainly seems to be a situation worth keeping an eye on.
