Newcastle United are reportedly set to offer £43 million for Juventus winger Federico Chiesa.

That’s according to Italian outlet TuttoJuve, who claim that Newcastle United are very keen on the 25-year-old winger, and a deal is expected to progress with Juventus ‘over the coming days’.

It would represent a pivot from their number one target which is believed to be Leicester City’s Harvey Barnes.

A report from The Telegraph claims that the English winger is the club’s preferred choice, and a deal was reported to be close to being concluded.

After all, it is hard to see Newcastle both Chiesa and Barnes in the same window.

The Italian winger, Chiesa, made just 21 appearances in Serie A in 2022-23, with just two goals and five assists to his name, in what was a disappointing season for the former Fiorentina man due to injury issues.

Chiesa for £43 million represents superb value for money for Newcastle

If it’s a straight shootout between Barnes and Chiesa, it should be a simple decision.

Despite his recent struggles for Juventus, Chiesa’s superb performances in the European Championship should make him an appealing signing for Eddie Howe.

The key decision will of course come down to the Italian, who is a national teammate of Newcastle’s latest signing, Sandro Tonali.

Speaking to DAZN following the final game of the season against Udinese, Chiesa said: “I have a training camp with Italy and then we will play in the Nations League, then we will see.”

With Allan Saint-Maximin remaining an inconsistent figure for Newcastle and Anthony Gordon struggling to adapt since his switch from Everton, a move for Chiesa makes sense.

A player with speed, trickery, and a fine shot, the Italian would be a lethal weapon for the Magpies.

Whether Newcastle could afford the signing of Chiesa due to financial fair play, remains to be seen. But, what is for sure, if Newcastle have a chance to sign the 25-year-old, they should do what they can to sign him.

The winger is highly rated.

Chiesa is “often simply unstoppable for his opponents” and has “lightning speed”, according to Juventus’s official website, while Juventus and Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon described him as “really special” in La Gazzetta dello Sport in July 2021.
