Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United have been linked with Lille striker Jonathan David.

According to L’Equipe, Newcastle United are interested in signing Jonathan David from Lille in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur are also reported to be keen on David, described as “a fantastic player” by BBC Sport pundit and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards on Match of the Day in November 2022.

Lille are open to selling the 23-year-old striker, but the Ligue 1 club are looking for €60 million (£51.55 million) in transfer fees for him.

Jonathan David could flourish at Newcastle United

We believe that Lille striker Jonathan David would be a very good signing for Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

David is one of the best young strikers out there, and Lille reportedly being open to selling him this summer is very encouraging for Newcastle.

Yes, Newcastle have Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson on their books already, but there is an argument to be made that manager Eddie Howe needs another striker – potentially a better one.

Wilson is 31 now and has had injury problems.

Isak can play out wide and is able to operate with another striker.

David is 23 now and could be a star for Newcastle for years to come.

Newcastle will play in the UEFA Champions League next season and will hope to become regulars in Europe’s premier club competition in the coming years.

The Magpies need strong competition in all areas of the pitch.

David, who can play out wide or as a centre-forward, made 36 starts and one substitute appearance for Lille last season.

The Canadian star scored 24 goals and gave four assists in those games.

During the 2021-22 season, the youngster made 32 starts and six substitute appearances in Ligue 1 for Lille.

The striker scored 15 goals in those games.
